It is with regret that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friends and members

Gwyn A Evans FRCS 

Gwyn began his career at the RJAH on the Orthopaedic training programme in 1974.

He took over as consultant in charge of the Children’s Unit in 1980 on the retirement of Mr J Rowland Hughes.

He retired as director of the unit in 2004.

Working part-time from the age of 60, enabled him to take time out each year to use his surgical skills to help people in developing countries.

The first hospital where he helped to set up orthopaedic facilities was a former British Mission Hospital in Shillong, India which he visited for two years in succession.

In 2007 he began work at a charity children’s hospital in Malawi, and planned to return the following year. (Information from an Advertiser article published 14.03.07 on GAE’s charity work).

During  his time at the RJAH he joined our renowned Old Oswestrians Club 1974.

He was awarded the Lloyd Griffiths Medal in 1980  (Founded in 1975 this medal is awarded to a trainee  who makes the most outstanding contribution to the Oswestry/Stoke  training programme during the year)

He became president of the Old Oswestrians’ Club in 2006. 

Gwyn Passed away peacefully at home on July 20th 2022, aged 78 years. The much loved husband of Mary, devoted father of Alys, Sian and Owen and treasured grandfather of Megan, Finlay, Hannah, Lachlan, Carys, Henry and John.

A Memorial Service will be held at Capel Seion, Glyn Ceiriog on Tuesday August 2nd at 12 pm. Family flowers only, donations, if desired, to The Severn Hospice or Roberts Hospital, Shillong which may be sent c/o The Funeral Directors. T Arwyn Evans.

Arwyn passed away on 13th October 2021.

During his career he was a consultant based at Bangor and had sessions at  here at the RJAH, he was also a member of the so-called "Welsh Firm" until his retirement  which was a fore runner of our Welsh weekend Friday afternoon teaching and his protrait hangs in the Institute of Orthopaedics.
